How to Enter
Cheat Codes in GTA 6

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19, 2026, and Rockstar has not confirmed how cheats will be entered — or whether the game will include them at all. What follows is how cheat entry has worked in every Grand Theft Auto game released so far. It is the best guide available until the game is in players' hands, and we will update this page within hours of the first verified reports on launch day.

Everything below is marked clearly as either established behaviour from previous games or an assumption about GTA 6. We would rather tell you what we don't know than guess and be wrong.

Before you enter any cheat

Two things are worth doing first, both learned the hard way by GTA V players.

Save your game. Cheats in GTA V could not be undone by any means other than reloading. If you spawned a vehicle you didn't want or triggered an effect that made a mission unwinnable, a recent save was the only way back.

Finish your trophy hunting. In GTA V, activating any cheat disabled achievement and trophy progress for that session. Nothing was permanently lost — loading a clean save restored normal progress — but anything you accomplished while a cheat was active did not count. This is unconfirmed for GTA 6, but it is the safest assumption to work from.

Entering cheats on PS5

On PlayStation, cheats have always been entered as a rapid button sequence during normal gameplay. There is no menu and no pause screen involved. You press the sequence, and the game confirms it on screen.

  1. Load into free roam. Not a mission, not a cutscene, not the pause menu.

  2. Make sure you are not in a vehicle unless the cheat specifically calls for it.

  3. Enter the sequence quickly, using the D-pad for all directional inputs.

  4. Watch for the on-screen confirmation. In GTA V this was a brief message in the corner.

  5. If nothing happens, wait two seconds and enter it again from the start.

The D-pad detail matters more than people expect. GTA V did not register analog stick movement as directional input for cheat codes. Players who assumed the stick would work spent a great deal of time concluding, wrongly, that a code was broken.

Entering cheats on Xbox Series X and Series S

The process is identical to PlayStation. Only the button names differ, and they map directly:

PlayStation -> Xbox

X -> A

Circle -> B

Square -> X

Triangle -> Y

L1 / L2 -> LB / LT

R1 / R2 -> RB / RT

Because the mapping is one-to-one, any PlayStation cheat code can be translated to Xbox by substituting the buttons above. This is how cheat lists for both platforms have always been produced, and it is why codes for the two consoles have never differed in substance.

Why speed matters

Cheat sequences time out. The game holds your recent inputs in a short rolling buffer, and if you pause too long between presses, the earliest inputs fall out of that buffer and the sequence no longer matches.

In practice this means a ten-button code needs to be entered in roughly two to three seconds. There is no official figure, and the window has never been documented by Rockstar, but it is short enough that deliberate, careful pressing will usually fail while a quick confident run will succeed.

If a code isn't working, entering it faster is the single most effective thing to try.

PC: the cheat console

PC versions have always worked differently. In GTA V you press the tilde key (~) to open a text box, type the cheat word — PAINKILLER, SKYFALL, HOTHANDS and so on — and press Enter.

Earlier games in the series let you simply type the cheat word at any point during gameplay without opening anything first. GTA V introduced the console box, and it is reasonable to expect GTA 6 keeps it.

Worth stating plainly: there is no announced PC version of GTA 6. The game launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. A PC release has followed every previous GTA title eventually, but Rockstar has announced nothing.

Phone cheats

Both GTA IV and GTA V supported dialling cheats from the player character's in-game mobile phone. You open the phone, type a number, and the cheat activates — frequently faster and more reliable than a ten-button controller sequence, and much easier to get right on the first attempt.

This method deserves particular attention for GTA 6. Everything Rockstar has shown of the game places the phone at the centre of the experience, including a tablet-style interface visible in the Extended Look footage. If cheats ship in GTA 6, the phone is a strong candidate for where they live.

Why your cheat code isn't working

In order of how often each one turns out to be the cause:

  1. You entered it too slowly. The most common cause by a wide margin. Try again, faster.

  2. You used the analog stick instead of the D-pad. Directional inputs must come from the D-pad.

  3. You're in a mission. GTA V blocked most cheats during story missions. Return to free roam.

  4. You reloaded a save. Cheats do not persist. They must be re-entered after every load.

  5. You're in the online mode. Cheats have never worked in GTA Online and are not expected to work in GTA 6's online mode.

  6. The code is wrong. Cheat lists circulate with transcription errors in them. Check it against a source that states how the code was verified.
